Utah Scenic Byway 12 What to Expect

Paul Kostopoulos Paul Kostopoulos ยท

Scenic Byway 12 runs through the heart of southern Utah’s canyon country, and the problem for first-timers is that it is deceptively long and remote, with stretches where there is no gas, no service, and no room for error. It is one of the best drives in America, but it is also one that punishes the unprepared in a way a coastal road never will. The route runs roughly a hundred twenty miles between Bryce Canyon and Torrey, and the middle section is the one people remember. The Hogsback climbs onto a spine of rock with drop-offs on both sides, a section that looks terrifying in photos and feels, in reality, like a normal mountain road with less guardrail than you would like. Drive it in daylight, keep both hands loose on the wheel, and it is manageable, even if your knuckles do not agree. The stops are the point, not the miles.
