GPS Units vs Phone Navigation for Road Trips

Paul Kostopoulos Paul Kostopoulos ยท

The debate between a dedicated GPS unit and your phone’s navigation is one most people have settled in favor of the phone, but the problem is that the phone has a weakness that shows up exactly when a road trip goes off the grid. The choice is not as simple as modern versus outdated, because each tool fails in a different situation, and the smart move is knowing when each one is the right tool. The phone is the better tool almost everywhere, with live traffic, up-to-date maps, and the familiar interface you already know, and for most driving it is the obvious choice. The weakness is signal, because phone navigation that streams maps over data falls apart in the mountains and the desert, exactly the remote areas where a wrong turn has the highest cost.
