Coastal Road Trips on the East Coast

The East Coast does not get the same road trip glory as the West, but the problem is not a lack of scenery, it is that the coastline is harder to follow and the good stretches are separated by highways and sprawl. The coastal drives that do exist, from the Outer Banks to Acadia, are worth the effort of stringing them together, provided you know where the road actually meets the water.The Outer Banks of North Carolina are the classic, a string of barrier islands where the road runs between dunes and sound, and the drive down to Hatteras and across the ferries to Ocracoke is the East Coast’s answer to a coastal highway.
